14. Copley's wools
These examples of fine 2 ply yarn were produced by L. Copley-Smith and Sons Ltd of Manchester. The Excelsior and Cobweb brands were both pure wool and were made over a long period of time, from the 1930s to the 1960s. It is difficult to date the ball bands precisely, although the Excelsior ball band showing a mountain climber is probably 1930s, and the Cobweb ball band labelled ‘A Donbros Product’, dates from around 1960, by which time Copley’s had been taken over. These yarns link to a number of vintage Copley’s patterns that are held in the KCG Collection.
