18. Granny Squares Jacket
This crocheted edge-to-edge jacket has a fresh and bright look that belies its age. It has wide elbow length sleeves and is made up of squares constructed from clusters of crochet trebles, usually called ‘Granny Squares’. It was probably made in the 1970s, when Granny Squares were extremely popular and fashionable, and came into the KCG Collection in 1999. All the squares are identical, having a central yellow flower surrounded by a white edge and a navy-blue border. The jacket is made of acrylic yarn and measures 69cm/27.2”, shoulder to hem, with a sleeve underarm size of 32cm/12.6”. It has a circumference of 88cm/34.6”.
