89. Volcano hanging
This highly textured piece measures 17ins/43cms across by 29ins/74cms with a fringed ‘lava flow’ that measures 27ins/69cms approx. Backed with interlining and hung from wide tabs that fit over a Perspex rod, it is purely decorative and intended as a wall hanging. It is made from wools and some artificial yarns using highly textured crochet. The colours suggest a volcanic eruption with the lava flow being represented by threads of orange and white flowing from the central area of the ’volcano’.
A label on the reverse says ‘Designed and made by Jan Messent’. She pioneered textile art from the 1970s onwards and this is one of many pieces designed and made at that time. It came into the collection in 2004 but was probably made before that.
