Knitted Together: The Korean Lives and Legacies of Richard and Joan Rutt – 28 Sept 2024 – 4 May 2025

28 September 2024 @ 10:00 am 4 May 2025 @ 5:00 pm

Knitted Together: The Korean Lives and Legacies of Richard and Joan Rutt is a temporary exhibition at the Oriental Museum, Durham University.

Drawing on the objects and photographs of the main donors to the Korean collection at the Oriental Museum, Knitted Together details Richard and Joan Rutt’s 20 years living in South Korea in the immediate aftermath of the Korean War (1950 – 1953).

Richard Rutt was also known as ‘The Knitting Bishop’ due to his love of handknitting and his influential publication ‘The History of Handknitting’ (1987).

Of particular interest to members will be the famous knitted bishop’s mitre, designed, created and worn by Richard Rutt for his role of Bishop of Leicester, along with several handknitted gloves on loan for the exhibition from the Rutt family.

The exhibition is free and runs from 28th September – 4th May 2025.
