Knitted Shawl designed in Shetland
The shawl was designed by Mrs A. Hunter of Unst and Mrs Hunter’s original shawl is in the Knitting & Crochet Guild collection (item 2014.005.0020).
This leaflet was published in 1952 or 1953, and the design was republished by Patons many times.
Mrs Hunter, the original shawl and the subsequent history of the design are the subject of the chapter ‘Knitting the Tree of Life’ in ‘The Book of Haps’ by Kate Davies.
Yarn: 8 oz Patons Beehive fingering 2-ply, Patonised.
Size: 47 ins square
Gauge/tension: 7 stitches and 9 rows to an inch in stocking stitch using (UK) No. 8 needles (4mm).
