1920s Fair Isle Man’s Pullover.
The pattern for this ‘handsome sleeveless sweater’ appeared in 1926, in a booklet of ‘Woollies for Men’ (Weldon’s Sixpenny Series No. 130).
Fair Isle pullovers and sweaters for men were very popular in the 1920s, after the Prince of Wales wore one to play golf.
There is a pullover knitted to this pattern in the Guild collection (item 1993.060.0006), in similar pastel colours to those specified. For more information, see the article in Slipknot, Issue 177 (December 2022).
Yarn: Ayr 3-ply super fingering: 3 oz in one colour, 1 oz in each of three other colours.
Size: Round lower edge unstretched: 30 inches. Shoulder to lower edge: 27 inches.
Gauge/tension: not stated. Derived from pattern stitch count round bottom edge: 35.2 stitches in 4 inches on (UK) No. 4 needles (4 mm) worked in colour pattern.
