Leader: Barbara Smith
Craft: Hand Knitting, Crochet
Experience: Any
Summary: The workshop will allow participants to examine closely some tools, gadgets and other items (from the Guild collection and my own) that were innovative at the time – shown by the fact that they were patented.
Description

The workshop will allow paticipants to examine closely some vintage items whose invention attempted to make knitting or crochet easier in some way. There will be knitting needles and crochet hooks, other gadgets such as yarn holders and row counters, even a couple of knitting patterns. They are from the Guild collection, as well as some of my own. The patent documents often discuss what were the problems with previous items that they intend to solve. The workshops will cast light on some ways in which technology assisted knitters and crocheters from the late 19th century through the 20th century.
