Leader: Steve Foreman
Craft: Hand Knitting, Crochet, Machine Knitting
Experience: Beginner
Summary: By the end of this workshop we will have identified the steps you would need to go through to modify an existing pattern to create the a garment that was a different size or used a different yarn weight than the original. We will also have identified some on-line resources that you can use to help you with the decisions and calculations needed.
Description

This workshop was prompted by suggestions that we give members hints on how to interpret patterns from the Collection, which were often written for a single size.
Even when using modern patterns, the design often needs to be adapted to achieve a good fit. The way you approach this is the same as you would use to knit something from a vintage pattern, so the workshop is suitable for anyone looking for hints on how to adapt a pattern.
This workshop is intended to help you think through the steps you need to take to achieve a garment that fits.
About the workshop leader

I started knitting when I was working away from home as a way of “turning off” in the evenings. I always have several projects on the go – and always one that contains something new. In the past, I have “investigated” stranded knitting, lace knitting and steeks and created workshops for them, three of which have been given at previous Conventions.
Preparing this workshop has been a path of exploration – and I expect that participants will teach me more than I teach them!

Skills required
You will need to be familiar with reading knitting patterns. Ideally, you will be able to cast on, knit in both stocking stitch and 1×1 rib, and bind off.
Note: although this workshop will use a hand knitting pattern, the principles steps and calculations you need also apply to adapting machine knitting and crochet patterns.
Preparation
Prepare two swatches that you will use to measure your tension (gauge). Each swatch should be about 15 cm wide and high. One swatch should be in stocking stitch and the other in 1×1 rib. Bringing the swatches is not essential, but you will need the swatches to get the most from one of the exercises.
What to bring
- Paper or notebook for making notes and jotting down calculations
- Pencil and eraser
- Ruler (15cm or longer) with mm graduations
- Charged mobile phone, tablet or computer for browsing the internet and using as a calculator
- Tape measure (for making measurements of your body).
- Your swatches.
Additional material
You will be given a handout that covers the main aspects of the workshop and that contains links to additional resources.
