Pop-up exhibition and crafting for World Wide Knit in Public Day – alongside Fringe Arts Bath – 8 June 2024

8 June @ 11:00 am 2:00 pm

Bath Branch’s theme for visitors is ‘learn to knit or crochet, and watch the skills in action’.

As part of the Bath Fringe Festival, we will be at the Newark Works to celebrate World Wide Knit in Public Day (WWKIP).

What is WWKIP? It’s an international event, started by a Danish woman. The event’s motto is ‘Better living through stitching together’ – we reckon this is a nice fit with the Fringe ethos and the aims of the Knitting & Crochet Guild: sharing knowledge and skills, encouraging creativity and preserving the heritage of our crafts.

Our plan is:

Have a pop-up craft exhibition: take or wear other things we’ve made

  • Chat to visitors about our crafts, demonstrate our skills and show people how to knit and crochet
  • Tell people about the Bath branch and the national Knitting & Crochet Guild, and how they can get involved.

We’ll have the branch’s bag of yarn and tools, to prepare the first couple of rows for some simple squares (knitting or crochet). So we’ll have some pieces ready that we can use to demonstrate and to teach visitors who want to try. And of course you can bring your current project to demonstrate more advanced skills!

What to bring:

  • A current yarn project that you can use to demonstrate your craft.
  • Spare needles, hooks and yarn to demonstrate skills and let visitors have a go.
  • Either wear or bring something you’ve made.
  • If you’ve got knitted or crocheted bunting, please bring it to help decorate our pitch.
  • Drinks and snacks – or money for the cafe. The Fringe Arts team is also kindly offering free coffee, tea and water for all helpers.
  • Whatever is sensible for the weather – suncream, sunhat, umbrella, waterproofs etc!

We’ll need help to set up and decorate our pitch from 10.30am, and to and pack things after 2pm. Please lend a hand if you can.

If the weather is not on our side, we will move inside the building.

Our event details are live on the international WWKIP site: https://www.wwkipday.com/bath-knitting-crochet-guild-at-fringe-arts-bath-world-wide-knit-in-public-day/

And here we are on the Fringe site: https://www.fringeartsbath.co.uk/events-2024/knitinpublic

Newark Works is located south of the river. It’s close to the bus and train stations and Avon Street car park – use the new pedestrian Quays Bridge to cross the river.

You might want to have a look at the rest of the Bath Fringe Festival Programme, 24 May – 9 June 2024. It offers arts from street theatre, dance and comedy to circus arts and music. https://www.bathfringe.co.uk

There is an exhibition called Pillowtalk by the Profanity Embroidery Group at Newark Works on the same day: https://www.fringeartsbath.co.uk/pillowtalk. Be warned, the exhibits include sweary language!

We’re looking forward to a fun event with a festive atmosphere!
