Royal Baby’s Fisherman’s Sweater

A toddler-sized traditional gansey

This free leaflet from the Daily Telegraph was issued in the late 1940s, and the ‘Royal Baby’ was possibly the King (born 1948).

It has the usual gansey construction – knitted in the round up to the armholes, then back and front knitted separately. The sleeve stitches are picked up around the armhole, and the sleeves are knitted downwards to the wrist.

There is a sweater knitted to this pattern in the Guild collection (item 1994.155.0007).

Yarn: Mountain Maid St Ives 3-ply
Size: Chest 22in (to fit 2o in chest)
Gauge/tension: 8½ stitches and 10½ rows to one inch in stocking stitch using No 12 needles.
