In this talk Nic Corrigan discusses her varied career in knitwear design from a university fashion degree, through the fast fashion supply chain in industry to choosing self employment and building her own creative practise and helping to share her love of machine knitting through tutoring.

Machine knitting has often been viewed as a solitary craft that isn’t easily transportable but Nic challenges this misconception by sharing her personal experiences of machine knitting around the world. Through photos and samples she demonstrates the power of meeting with other (machine) knitters and the bonds that can be forged through in-person events and gatherings.

Covering her experiences of creating and running an online Community for machine knitters she discusses how technology and Zoom has increased the opportunity to share the love of knitting both virtually and in real life. And the huge potential when you combine the benefits of both.

After specialising in knitwear as part of her Fashion Design degree, Nic worked as a Knitwear Designer in industry for several years before leaving to set-up her own knitwear label, Whitehall Studio. Nic designed, made and sold her own unique garments – often inspired by her local surroundings in West Yorkshire – for over 10 years.

Nic is passionate about passing on her knowledge to others and teaches workshops, both in-person and on-line. In 2020, Nic launched the Machine Knit Community – a private, online network to bring together Machine Knitters of all abilities to develop skills, habits & rituals to get the most out of their machines and have the confidence and ability to design and make their own professional looking knitwear that fits perfectly.

In 2022, her first book was published on machine knitting: Fair Isle. She now designs modern machine knitting patterns so that other machine knitters can create beautiful garments of their own.
