Barbara Smith explores the Knitting & Crochet Guild’s Collection. (37m)

Knitted sleeveless cardigan for a young boy (with phot showing a boy wearing one). The back is blue in rib, as are the bands at the armholes. The bottom border and button band are also blue. The white front has a pocket on each side with a plant on each side - the plants and patterns on the pockets are made with bobbles. The five yellow flowers on each plant are embroidered.

Description

The Guild’s Collection is an unparalleled record of household knitting and crochet in this country. Barbara shows the scope of the collection, from publications to textile art, via knitting needles and crochet hooks, and including a few things that you might find surprising. The main part of the talk shows some of the knitted and crocheted pieces in the collection which have rarely if ever been shown and tell their stories.

Fair Isle jumper with cartridge rib welt, neck band and cuffs in light and dark brown. The dominant colour palette is brown/red, but yellow, blue and green provide pop-out colour. Overlayed on the jumper is a photograph of what appears to be a family outing with the father wearing the jumper.
